This exchange is usually followed by, Interviewer: “And why should we hire you?” Applicant: “Because I’m a people person!” Every single time this happens I get tickled. (In the south, that means I have to really hold back so that I don’t burst out laughing).
Maybe I’m a little skeptical. I believe that “I’m a people person,” and “this looks like a fun place to work” are NOT good indicators that this candidate can come close to doing a great job. So, now you have a clear guideline about how to hold this audition. What should you do with the people that really shine during the process?
- You could just hire them
- You may want to spend a little one on one time with them as well
If you pick number two, then we would recommend asking the following questions.
- How do you handle doing the things you don’t want to do? Give me an example of a time when you completed a task that was NOT what you wanted to do.
- I’d like to know how you normally respond when you think you’ve been treated unfairly.
- Then of course, ask why they want to work for you and why you should hire them… You deserve to be tickled!
