I Can’t Quit Smiling

The last several days have been amazing. It’s been hard to know where to start with the newsletter this week, so I decided to confine it to last Thursday and Friday. You do need to be sure and watch for next week’s update, though, because I got to meet Zig Ziglar in person on Monday! Pretty amazing. I’ll tell you all about it in next week’s update.

Last Thursday and Friday, I had the honor and privilege to work at the United States Air force Academy. Doesn’t that just say it all? The hillbilly from Arkansas (if you don’t know, I was born and raised in Arkansas) got to teach leadership and customer service to the food and beverage folks who serve 4600 cadets 3 times a day. Boy, is that a big group!

Amazing–incredible–unbelievable–mind boggling–remarkable and every other word you can think of describes this feat that they pull off in record time – 30 minutes to be exact. Seriously, those cadets march in to the music of the USAFA band (very cool by the way), stand at attention until everyone gets into the dining room for lunch, sit, get served by the fine employees of Mitchell hall, eat, and are out of there in 30 minutes! I stood with tears in my eyes as these young men and women came to lunch. Isn’t that crazy? I was touched by the discipline, the unity, the youth, and, most of all, their commitment to serve us and our country. Plus, if you saw a 1 ½ acre dining room wrapped in the panoramic view of the mountains in Colorado Springs, you might cry too!

See You At Lunch!

As I travel the country, it is amazing to see the differences in customer service. I really enjoy watching people who are so committed to their jobs that they can’t help but provide awesome sales and service. Last year, while working with a new client, JB, my VP of Operations, and I went to breakfast prior to going on site. There was nothing spectacular about the timing of the service. It was average. However, when it was it time to order, our waitress came alive. She made great recommendations about the new items on the breakfast menu. She sincerely suggested that we would love whatever item we ordered. I had no trouble taking her recommendation, and she was right! It was good. This is not the amazing part. At the end of the breakfast, she came to the table and expressed how glad she was that we chose to have breakfast with her – and then came the amazing part.

Thank You Zig Ziglar

We are very excited about all of our upcoming training events. We have a great line up of webinars that anyone can attend for free, scheduled through the end of the year. Please be sure and catch the schedule. Next week I’m participating in the Bowling Centers’ Association of Florida Annual Meeting, as well as the upcoming Mid–South Convention in October. Pam is speaking at the West Coast Bowling Convention, the East Coast Bowling Centers’ Convention, and the Texas state event is also in October. There are several other places that we will be around the country in the next few weeks so please check our “On the Road” schedule often.

The best upcoming training opportunity is on November 11th/12th in the Dallas / Fort Worth area. We are hosting a Sales Summit regional training event and hope you’ll plan on being there. Click here to download the PDF.

I am very excited to see so many of you in the next several weeks and want to make the most of the training time that we will have while we’re together. There’s so much to learn and it’s exciting to me that even though I’m on the teaching side, I’m pretty sure I learn more than I ever teach when I have the opportunity to be in the field with you.

Recently I experienced a great learning moment by reaching out and just asking for the knowledge. Let me explain… If you know me at all, you know that I’m a big Zig Ziglar fan. He lives here in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. I’ve lived here for 20 years and it’s always been on my mind to meet him in person.

Are You Doing What You’ve Always Done?

Then I don’t need to tell you. You’ll get what you’ve always had if you keep doing it that way! I belong to a terrific leadership group, Vistage. In November, I’m attending a very cool conference, and I think one of the titles I saw for the meeting was “THE NEW NORMAL”. I can hardly wait to see what that means. I’ve never been sure what “normal” is anyway.

Everything is changing so fast. We can look at 2000, and certainly back into the 90s, and our language isn’t even the same. If you own a piece of technology that doesn’t have an “I” in front of it, you aren’t cool today.

I think the same is true with sales. Our consumers do not buy in the same ways they used to buy. Salespeople have to move quickly and listen very closely to the customer. Customers will tell you how they want to do business. What works for one may not or will not work for another. Here’s what I’ve noticed in the selling world that I personally compete in and the family entertainment sales world where we work with sales teams on a daily basis. Here are the top 10 ways to get more sales now.
